Pinktober: Breast Cancer Awareness Month Product Picks

It's here, the pinkest month of the year. October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and that means all kinds of delectable goodies with a good heart. It is never easier than in October (or more fun, or more pink) to give yourself a little something awesome AND have it benefit a good cause! I've been pouring over pink products all month trying to find the best, most awesome, most crave-able pink things, which also support charities doing essential work to find a cure for breast cancer. Passion combines blooming peony and dewy garden roses with warm sandalwood and a hint of flowering pittosporum, Evelyn Lauder’s beloved fragrance note. “Passion honors the memory and the extraordinary achievements of Evelyn Lauder. Her passion and dedication to finding a cure for and preventing breast cancer by establishing The Breast Cancer Research Foundation are legendary. Not only did she raise awareness of breast cancer globally, she also inspired leading scientists to study the disease by funding ground-breaking research at renowned medical centers worldwide. I was inspired to create Passion after hearing Evelyn’s husband, Leonard, lovingly announce his commitment to continuing her critically important work. They were in this fight together, and NEST Fragrances is pleased to join them by supporting The Breast Cancer Research Foundation with Passion.”—Laura Slatkin, Founder and CEO of NEST Fragrances

A portion of all proceeds from this lush, floral candle will be donated to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Nest Passion Candle $28

Wedding Wednesday: Masks

Now, the internet is filled with helpful wedding planning timelines, but not one of them includes what's number one on my to do list - make my skin look the best it's ever looked.

I spent most of my life blessed with pretty good skin and then hurricane chemo came along and suddenly I had to deal with premature aging AND acne the likes of which I haven't suffered since high school. (Remember this?)

I decided what my routine really needed was a weekly mask - something that would help out with all of the above issues, but also meet my new rigorous standards for natural ingredients. I also wanted something that would feel good on my face (during AND after! no stinging!) and would smell good. I was looking for the whole package. So I set out on my quest. I read about a million reviews online, poured over beauty blogs (and wedding blogs) and then visited my local Sephora to exploit their generous sampling policy. After several months of testing (and a few losers that left my face looking - thank you Joyce - like an old rubber band) I have found a winner:

Tata Harper - Resurfacing Mask

Read the reviews for this product online and you will think that angels made this from unicorn feathers. That's how much people love it. And after using it once a week for two months, I have to say I am a convert.
The smell is VERY floral, but quite delicious. It's clear, so I can wear it around the house when fiance is home without hiding in shame in the bathroom. And of course, my skin looks kind of amazing.

It's also made from all natural ingredients that reads like a smoothie recipe:

-Pink Clay: Reduces pore size, detoxifies, and tones without stripping the skin.
-Beet Extract: Promotes hydration in the outer layers of the skin, helping increase elasticity.
-White Willow Extract: Gently exfoliates, relieves red skin, and refreshes the skin's appearance.
-Aloe Vera: Naturally stimulates healthy cell growth, repairs damaged tissues, and hydrates the skin.

Here's some pictures of my skin post mask. (Full disclosure: I have a little bit of Benefit Oxygen Wow Foundation, which I used as an under-eye concealer, and Nars Blush in Torrid.)

I'm still looking for a good daily moisturizer, so if you have suggestions PLEASE send them my way!

Healthy TWO INGREDIENT Cookies

Get Skinny / 2 large old bananas 1 cup of quick oats. You can add in choc chips, coconut, or nuts if you'd like. Then 350º for 15 mins. THAT'S IT! - in-the-corner

I love Pinterest. I just do. (Don't even get me started on DIY pallet furniture.) But besides wedding planning, I think it might be the most useful tool ever for discovering and storing recipes. This recipe is everything I want in a recipe - easy, quick, only requires TWO ingredients, and totally delicious (also bonus: low calorie and relatively healthy.) My only issue with this recipe is that try as I might to make them for other people they always seem to end up in my own tummy instead.

Here are the instructions:

Mix 2 large old bananas with 1 cup of quick oats. Then 350º for 15 mins.

Why can't all recipes be like this??

I still have breast cancer and I'm still asking you for a favor...

Can you believe it's been over a year since I was diagnosed with breast cancer? Me neither. Sometimes it feels like a million years, sometimes it feels like last week. So much has happened, all of which you can read about on the blog, but in honor of October and Breast cancer awareness month I wanted to give you a loving nudge.

Nobody but you (and maybe a lucky someone) gets to feel your breasts everyday- which means nobody but you  can notice right away if something changes. It's not hard, no fancy charts or weird hand motions. Just pay attention in the shower, maybe notice how your cycle effects them and then notice if something feels different. Weird. Not normal. Whatever that means for you.

Until there's a better tool for young women to detect breast cancer this is our best and only option. Breast cancer kills young women because by the time we have a large noticeable lump, the cancer is pretty advanced. But if we can take control of our own bodies and just stay aware, we can make a difference and catch things earlier.

Thank you all for your continued love and support, thank you for taking care of yourselves (this is a challenge I wish on no one else!) and thank you for sharing this and reminding your loved ones to check their breasts.

And if you're feeling generous and want to do me two favors, October is a great month to buy some awesome pink things which will contribute to resources to help me find my cure (I'll be posting some fun lists all this month!)

Lots and lots of love and healthy wishes

Wedding Wednesday: The Story of Steve & Dena

This is (of course) an excerpt from the wedding website I am attempting to build! Enjoy....

The Best Online Order Dena Ever Made...

That's right - Dena ordered Steve online. While she may be an expect online orderer, this one definitely beats all the rest.  Dena was working on a book about online dating when she first reached out to Steve, and then (in his words) disappeared. She resurfaced briefly while working on the final edits of the book and Steve sprang. Asking for her number and calling her the next day to meet that night. Steve likes to leave this part out of the story and just tell people that they kissed within 30 seconds of meeting. (After 3 months of emailing, a two hour phone call and an entire day of texting, but whatever, Dena says) Either way you tell it, their eyes locked across the room, he swept her into his arms and like a romantic comedy they shared a delicious kiss. From that point on they were inseparable.

Three months later Dena moved in with Steve and they added another online find into the family - an exceptional rescue boxer named Fenway. Fenway will be walking his mom down the aisle, he is so happy to no longer be illegitimate.

Two years later, in a different Fenway (the baseball stadium) Steve proposed to Dena and she said yes!

Healthy, Affordable Delivery Meet Chefler

My first Chefler meal - DROOL
Food is so important. I am most likely preaching to the choir when I talk about how things like eating vegetables, fresh healthy meals, and maintaining a healthy weight can decrease your risk of cancer. I speak from personal experience when I say it can really make all the difference in the world when it comes to making you feel good (even when you have cancer.)

But at the end of the day I can get a cheeseburger and fries for under $10 and a quick trip through the drive-thru. I can get a delicious pile of dough dripping in cheese and grease delivered to my door without having to put pants on. Sometimes when you don't feel well, or you really don't feel well, or you're busy, or you're tired, or whatever, it can be really hard to find something good to eat that's also cheap and easy. Usually you have to pick one of the above.

But, I am lucky because I live in San Francisco, home of all things awesome in technology, and I am engaged to a man who follows these things and sends them to me. And that is how I came to fall in love with Chefler.

Changing your meals but um, how do you choose??
Chefler lets you order hot, healthy 500 calorie meals for about $10 a day to be delivered right to your door. They offer easy set up for Monday - Thursday (how did they know the weekends are not for dieting?!) The interface is baby-butt smooth, making it super easy to both select and change your delivery time, your meal (from one of three AMAZING choices) even where you want it delivered! It's even just as easy/pretty from my smartphone. Plus they send you a text confirmation which acts as an awesome heads up when it's about to head your way.

From my phone - oh hello
technology that actually works
My only complaints are that right now I have to call an actual person to add additional meals (sorry Fiance) and I can't add a tip online - so um, I have to have cash now? I feel bad for the delivery guys.

Also, they make it just a little too easy, like I could see myself forgetting to cancel a meal and the poor delivery guy is like, um, hello, girl who forgot to tip me on the first day, where are you??? But, well, that's probably going to be on me, not them.

If you are lucky enough to be in SF you need to check this out ASAP, and if you are not, feel free to start harassing them on Twitter. They seem nice and they even invited me to tour the kitchen!
